Antique oil painting on panel in a gilt gesso frame signed E.G.C. Greenly (1771–1839)

The inscription links the work directly to Rhiwlas, Titley, in Herefordshire, and the initials E.B.C. Greenly correspond to Lady Elizabeth Brown Coffin Greenly (1771–1839) of Titley Court, the principal Greenly family estate. The Greenly family were prominent landed gentry, and Lady Elizabeth’s diaries and papers are preserved in the Herefordshire Archives and Duke University collections. Importantly, the exact wording of this inscription has been transcribed and recorded in the Greenly Family History archives, which are dedicated to documenting the collections and history of Titley Court. This transforms the piece from a generic Victorian landscape to a recorded estate object with verifiable provenance.

The painting depicts a rustic English rural view with cottages, a chimney stack, surrounding trees, and two small figures walking near a pool or stream in the foreground. Rolling hills appear in the distance. The palette is composed of warm earth tones, olive greens, and a cool reflective passage at the base representing water. This composition reflects the Victorian tradition of producing topographical estate views that documented family lands and served as markers of heritage and status within country houses.

The paint surface is stable overall, with craquelure consistent with age and moderate surface soiling and discolored varnish.  The panel appears sound without splits or warping. The frame shows expected gesso losses and minor repairs but remains structurally intact.

size: 16” wide x 12” tall and framed with wire hanger
